Giddy Up Ginn

Contributed By Indian Cowboy

Ted Ginn has been getting roasted in the past couple weeks due to his dropped passes and lack of play-making ability. After all, he was a first round draft pick that was supposed to help revamp and re-energize this team. He was benched and he took a great deal of heat from the press after the Saints game. Now he can proudly claim that he was the deciding factor in the Dolphins’ sweep of the Jets this season.

Ginn took his frustration out on a big way and the victim was the Miami Jets. Ginn accomplished something that the NFL had never seen before. He became the first NFL player ever to return two kickoffs the length of the field for touchdowns. The first one marked 100 yards and the second one was marked at a 101 yards.

After the New Orleans game in which he was benched, Ginn called it the worst game of his life and one of the toughest weeks of his life. What is nuts is that the win over the Jets provided the Dolphins with a huge boost in the division as they are now 3-0 in the AFC East although they are 3-4 overall. Heck, the Dolphins are the only team to give the Colts any sort of trouble outside of the 49ers this week.

Even more impressive about the win was that the Jets had dominated the Dolphins on offense all day. They outgained Miami to a tune of 378-104 yards but it was Ginn’s back-to-back touchdown returns that provided the key offensive impetus at the right time. And, Jason Taylor returned a fumble nearly 50 yards for a touchdown as well. So, between these two players alone, the Dolphins managed to score 21 of their total 30 points that afternoon en route to a 30-25 win. The Dolphins offense managed to score only nine points in total. So, Ginn actually scored more than the entire Dolphins offense.

And, considering the Dolphins only allowed him to play special teams he certainly took advantage of his only opportunity to contribute. Ironically, it was an injury itself that gave Ginn the opportunity to return kicks or he might not have even had that opportunity if Patrick Cobbs had not gone down.

It is good to see decent players in the NFL have bounce-back weeks. In a profession that will laude you and then the next day send you to the doghouse, it is nice to see a talented playmaker like Ginn get some recognition. He definitely needs to work on his catching abilities as he is not a pure receiver, but the Dolphins knew that. But, certainly, he is out of the doghouse this week and he can use this as a catalyst to help the Dolphins in additional plays.
