Mega-Fight A Mega-Ass Kicking!
Contributed by Vegas Sports Informer
Saturday night at the MGM Grand I dragged my sore body to The Fight. (And a special thanks to Advil and other meds because I saw a great fight!) Here are my random thoughts from last weekend’s marquee event out in Las Vegas:
- Yes, I had doubts that Manny Pacquiao would have trouble with Miguel Cotto’s power but I was totally wrong. Pacquiao started off slow and I gave Cotto Round 1 because of his straight right jab that he didn’t use the whole fight. But after Round 1 it was all Pacquiao on my scorecard and I thought Pacquiao could have finished him anytime after the sixth round.
- I’m not Filipino and I just started to be a fan of the Pac Man but after what I saw last night I will be cheering for Manny anytime he fights because he is, in my eyes, one of the best fighters to ever tie up a pair of gloves. This Filipino champion has won seven belts in seven different weight classes. That right there is amazing itself! Pacquiao has never backed down from anyone and he will fight anyone, anytime, any place.
- Pacquiao fights are great for the Vegas economy, Vegas sports books, and PPV buys. He is the new face of boxing and if he beats Floyd Mayweather he will be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
- Yes, I mention ‘Money’ Mayweather and this is the fight that Vegas and the sporting world want to see. This mega fight would be a $100 million dollar fight and this should be the (early) Fight of the Century. The big hurdle for this fight will be the purse. Both fighters know that the public would love to see this fight happen but if Mayweather doesn’t want to share 50/50 down the middle then it might be wishful thinking. Pacquiao will fight Mayweather because Arum and Freddy Roach will tell him this is his next fight, it’s just getting Pretty Boy Floyd to share the wealth.
- One fan last night had a sign and it pretty much said it all about Pacquiao and his last 3 fights: “De La Hoya TKO 8, Hatton TKO 2, Cotto TKO 12 – Floyd Mayweather Jr., Your Next!”
- Odds for this mega-fight if it happens: I would make Pacquiao a small favorite maybe -130 and Mayweather +110.
- Here is a great article for those who don’t get to read Las Vegas Newspapers.
